Chapter 7.3, Problem 3MRPS
Solution

To calculate : The rule for the number of people that can be seated around n tables, compare the number of people that can be seated around n tables in the arrangement with the number that can be seated around n tables if the same tables are placed together along their long edges given that rectangular tables are placed together along their short edges as shown in the figure below.

  Holt Mcdougal Larson Algebra 2: Student Edition 2012, Chapter 7.3, Problem 3MRPS , additional homework tip 1

The number of people that can be seated around n tables in the first arrangement is greater than the people that can be seated around n tables in the second arrangement.

Given information :

Rectangular tables are placed together along their short edges as shown in the figure below.

  Holt Mcdougal Larson Algebra 2: Student Edition 2012, Chapter 7.3, Problem 3MRPS , additional homework tip 2

Formula used :

Look at the pattern of the tables and formulate a series.

Calculation :

Consider the rectangular tables as shown below.

  Holt Mcdougal Larson Algebra 2: Student Edition 2012, Chapter 7.3, Problem 3MRPS , additional homework tip 3

When tables are ordered, if there are n=1 tables, then 6 people can be seated.

  a1=6=2+41

When tables are ordered, if there are n=2 tables, then 10 people can be seated.

  a2=10=2+42

When tables are ordered, if there are n=3 tables, then 14 people can be seated.

  a3=14=2+43

In general, when n tables are placed, the number of people seated are as below.

  an=2+4n

In the scenario when tables are placed together along their long edges.

When tables are ordered, if there are n=1 tables, then 6 people can be seated.

  a1=6=4+21

When tables are ordered, if there are n=2 tables, then 8 people can be seated.

  a2=8=4+22

When tables are ordered, if there are n=3 tables, then 10 people can be seated.

  a3=10=4+23

In general, when n tables are placed, the number of people seated are as below.

  an=4+2n

Thus, the number of people that can be seated around n tables in the first arrangement is greater than the people that can be seated around n tables in the second arrangement.
