Concept explainers
Returning to Exercise 24, explain why it is reasonable for the graph representing the rocket flight to be shaped as it was. How does this conform to your intuition? Would a linear equation have been an acceptable model?
24. Rocket flight. Assume that if a model rocket is fired directly upward (with a certain velocity), its distance above the ground at time t is given by the equation
a. Graph this equation.
b. Are there any values for t that it would not make sense to
use for this equation because of the physical
characteristics of a rocket?
c. Find the time at which the rocket reaches its highest point.
d. Find the time at which the rocket returns to the ground.
