Pain Management: Laser Therapy “Effect of Helium-Neon Laser Auriculotherapy on Experimental Pain Threshold” is the title of an article in the journal Physical Therapy (Vol. 70, No. 1, pp. 24–30). In this article, laser therapy was discussed as a useful alternative to drugs in pain management of chronically ill patients. To measure pain threshold, a machine was used that delivered low-voltage direct current to different parts of the body (wrist, neck, and back). The machine measured current in milliamperes (mA). The pretreatment experimental group in the study had an average threshold of pain (pain was first detectable) at μ 5 3.15mA with standard deviation σ = 1.45mA. Assume that the distribution of threshold pain, measured in milliamperes, is symmetric and more or less mound-shaped. Use the
- (a) estimate a
range of milliamperes centered about the mean in which about 68% of the experimental group had a threshold of pain. - (b) estimate a range of milliamperes centered about the mean in which about 95% of the experimental group had a threshold of pain.

Recent research has questioned its effectiveness [Journal of Atmospheric Research (2010, Vol. 97 (2), pp. 513-525)]. An experiment was performed by randomly assigning 52 clouds to be seeded or not. The amount of rain generated was then measured in acre-feet. Captopril is a drug designed to lower systolic blood pressure. When subjects were treated with this drug, their systolic blood pressure readings (in mm Hg) were measured before and after the drug was taken. Results are given in the accompanying tables (based on data from "Essential Hypertension: Effect of an Oral Inhibitor of Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme," by MacGregor et al., British Medical Journal, Vol. 2). - Using specific data, we find a significant difference in the proportion of fruit flies surviving after 13 days between those eating organic potatoes and those eating conventional (not organic) potatoes. This exercise asks you to conduct a hypothesis test using additional data. In this case, we are testing Ho: Po = Pc Ha: Po > Pc o where p and p represent the proportion of fruit flies alive at the end of the given time frame of those eating organic food and those eating conventional food, respectively. Use a 5 % significance level. Effect of Organic Bananas After 25 Days After 25 days, the proportion of fruit flies eating organic bananas still alive is 0.44, while the proportion still alive eating conventional bananas is 0.41. The standard error for the difference in proportions is 0.032. What is the value of the test statistic? Round your answer to two decimal places. Z = i What is the p-value? Round your answer to three decimal places. p-value = iarrow_forwardA biologist wished to study the effects of ethanol on sleep time. A sample of 80 rats, matched for age and other characteristics, was selected, and each rat was given an oral injection having a particular concentration of ethanol per body weight. The rapid eye movement (REM) sleep time for each rat was then recorded for a 24-hour period. The results are summarized in the side-by-side boxplots below. (a) How is the amount of ethanol given related to the median REM sleep time? Explain.(b) Does the amount of ethanol given affect the variability of REM sleep time? Explain.(c) What amount of ethanol given leads to the most skewed distribution of sleep times?(d) Is the distribution of REM sleep times for the rats given 2 g/kg ethanol symmetric, skewed left,or skewed right?arrow_forward4. A sample of 16 healthy women aged 18 to 40 were randomly assigned to drink 24 ounces of either diet cola or water. Their urine was collected for three hours after ingestion of the beverage and calcium excretion (in mg) was measured. Philosophical and health issues are prompting an increasing number of Taiwanese to switch to a vegetarian lifestyle. In the paper “LDL of Taiwanese Vegetarians Are Less Oxidizable than Those of Omnivores” (Journal of Nutrition, Vol. 130, pp. 1591–1596), S. Lu et al. compared the daily intake of nutrients by vegetarians and omnivores living in Taiwan. Among the nutrients considered was protein. Too little protein stunts growth and interferes with all bodily functions; too much protein puts a strain on the kidneys, can cause diarrhea and dehydration, and can leach calcium from bones and teeth. The daily protein intakes, in grams, for 51 female vegetarians and 53 female omnivores are provided on the WeissStats site. Use the technology of your choice to do the following for each of the two sets of sample data. a. Obtain a histogram of the data and use it to assess the (approximate) normality of the variable under consideration. b. Obtain a normal probability plot…arrow_forward
