Interpretation:
The ionic radius of a non-metal needs to be compared with its atomic radius and the change in radius needs to be explained.
Concept introduction:
Ionic radius can be defined as the radius of the ion in an atom. The atomic radius of a particular element is the measure of the atoms size. It can also be defined as the distance between its boundary and nucleus of the element
Answer to Problem 62A
The ionic radius of a non-metal is larger than its atomic radius.
Explanation of Solution
The ionic radius of a non-metal is seen to be larger than the atomic radius. In the periodic table, the non-metals are placed on the right side and gain electrons when they ionize. On gaining electrons, the radius of the element increases as electrostatic repulsion increases.
For example, Chlorine which is a non-metal gain electron forming a negatively charged ions and hence becomes larger. Therefore, it results in the increase of ionic radius with the increase in the electrostatic repulsion.
