The height developed by the fluid with respect to the column in which it is placed is known as the head developed by the fluid.
The head is expressed in terms of Energy per unit mass or in units of length.
The head developed in the column can be due to the kinetic energy, potential energy or pressure energy of the fluid and are given by the Bernoulli’s equation.
The velocity head is developed due to the Kinetic energy of the fluid and is given as,
HV = Velocity head
v = Velocity of the fluid
g = Acceleration due to gravity
The pressure head or rise in pressure is developed due to the pressure energy of the fluid and is given as,
