Summary Introduction

Introduction

Functionalist look for the practical reasons a group exists, in this case membership conveys belongingness. Conflict theorists look for friction, and the group does create an in-group of members and out-group of nonmembers. Symbolic interactionists focus on language and meaning, and there is jargon used in the group, especially acronyms. The group has hierarchy based on experience, as new members may seek advice for how to improve. There is some element of competition in making posts and responses, but also in the rarity of equipment used. Social meanings shared include friendship, admiration, and the idea that we are all in on a better way to shave.
