Sales Let S represent sales of a new product (in thousands of units), let L, represent the maximum level of sales (in thousands of units), and let t represent time (in months). The rate of change of S with respect to t is proportional to the product of S and
(a) Write the differential equation for the sales model using these conditions.
When t = 0: L = 100, S = 10
When t = 1: S = 20
Verify that
(b) At what time is the growth in sales increasing most rapidly?
(c) Use a graphing utility to graph the sales function.
(d) Sketch the solution from part (a) on the slope field below. To print an enlarged copy of the graph, go to MathGraphs.com.
(e) Assume the estimated maximum level of sales is correct. Use the slope field to describe the shape of the solution curves for sales when, at some period of time, sales exceed L.

- The fox population in a certain region has an annualgrowth rate of 9 per year. In the year 2012, therewere 23,900 fox counted in the area. What is the foxpopulation predicted to be in the year 2020 ?arrow_forwardFind the constant of proportionality. y is directly proportional to x. If x=30, then y=15.arrow_forwardIt takes a total of 12 hours to drain a tank by opening a valve at the bottom. - dt' Population growth is commonly modeled upon the simple statement that the popu- lation growth rate, dy, is proportional to the present population, y. This can be written mathematically as d = ay where a > 0. You have just purchased a piece of property with a small lake that is suitable for raising trout. You feel that without any aid from you the trout population introduced into the pond will grow at a nominal annual rate of 5%. You realize the resulting D.E. for the growth rate becomes dy = (1/20) y. dy dt dt 2. State an explicit solution to the D.E., dt - 1 20 y with y(0) = 50. 3. Use the explicit solution to find the projected undisturbed trout population in the lake after 10 yrs, 30 yrs, 50 yrs, and 70 yrs. Give approximations to 2 decimal places. 1arrow_forwardThe rate at which a solid substance dissolves [dQ/dt] varies directly as the product of undissolved solid present (in the solvent) [A - Q] and as the difference between the saturation concentration [Cs] and the instantaneous concentration [Ci] of the substance. Let Q - the amount of the substance dissolved at any time t,Let A - the total amount of the substance, then dQ/dt = (A - Q)(Cs - Ci) Twenty pounds of salt is dumped into the tank containing 120 lb of solvent, and at the end of 22 minutes, the concentration is observed to be 1 part solute to 30 parts of solvent. Find the amount of solute that is in the solution at any time t, assuming that the saturation concentration is 1 part solute to 3 parts solvent. Answer is shown below.arrow_forward
