UniqueCakes
UniqueCakes is a company that builds customised cakes for clients. This mainly includes large cakes
for any occasions. They need an electronic system that will keep track of all the projects and their
progress. The client will approach a project manager and discuss the required cake. The project
manager enters the requirements for the cake on the system and notify a designer of the project. The
designer will create a possible design cake electronically on the system. The designer will notify the
project manager of the final design via the system.
The project manager will send the design to the client for comments or approval. The designer will
make the desired changes until the customer approves the design.
The bake department will create the cake from the design. A photo of the final cake will be uploaded on
the system, by the bake department.
Each cake comes with a special stand that is custom made for each cake. Once the customer approved
the design, the project manager…
Your company urgently needs a new manager in another division, and you have been invited to apply for the position. However, one of the job requirements is competence in the use of some sophisticated CAD (computer aided design) software. Currently you do not have that competence, but you are enrolled in a CAD course, so eventually you will have that competence (but not before the deadline for filling the new job). The application form for the job requires you to state whether or not you have the necessary CAD software competence. Is it ethically permissible to claim that you have (in order to get the job for which otherwise you are well qualified), even though strictly speaking this is not true? Would your answer be any different if your current boss informally (off the record) advised you to misrepresent your qualifications in this way, giving as his/her reason that you are overall the best qualified person for the new managerial position?
At Riverside Financial, where you work as a project manager, you have been asked to conduct
user training sessions during the implementation phase for a new information system. You must
develop a specific schedule for the tasks (the estimated task duration for each is shown in
parentheses):
First, you need to send an e-mail message to all department managers announcing the training
sessions (3 days). After the e-mail message goes out, two tasks can begin at the same time: You
can develop the training material (7 days) and confirm arrangements for the training facility you
plan to use (15 days). As soon as the training material is complete, you can work on two tasks at
once: Arrange to have copies of handout material printed (7 days) and develop a set of PowerPoint
slides (8 days). When the PowerPoint slides are ready, you conduct a practice training session with
the instructor who will assist you (3 days). Finally, when the practice session is over, the handout
material is ready, and…
