To answer the next three questions, refer to the following example. In 2003, Porsche unveiled its new sports utility vehicle (SUV), the Cayenne. With a price tag of over $40,000, the Cayenne goes from zero to 62 mph in 8.5 seconds. Porsche's decision to enter the SUV market was in response to the runaway success of other high-priced SUVs such as the Mercedes-Benz M class. Vehicles in this class had generated years of very high profits. The Cayenne certainly spiced up the market, and, in 2006, Porsche introduced the Cayenne Turbo S, which goes from zero to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds and has a top speed of 168 mph. The base price for the Cayenne Turbo S in 2014? Almost $115,000
Some analysts questioned Porsche’s entry into the luxury SUV market. The analysts were concerned because not only was Porsche a late entry into the market but also the introduction of the Cayenne might damage Porsche’s reputation as a maker of high-performance automobiles.
10. Erosion In evaluating the Cayenne, would you consider the possible damage to Porsche’s reputation as erosion?

- Techno Ltd manufactures components for laptop computers. One of its top selling products is the new solid-state drive, the Solix, which will offer improved speed and performance. Earlier this year, a Taiwanese company entered the market offering a similar drive at a price 10% below the Solix price of $400 per unit. Techno Ltd is currently achieving its target profit margin of 30% on all of its products. Required: 1. What target cost would have to be set for the Solix drive to remain competitive and meet the requirements of the company’s target profit margin? 2. Calculate the cost reduction objective. 3. Outline two cost management techniques Techno Ltd could apply to achieve the cost reduction objective.arrow_forwardThe Chromosome Manufacturing Company produces two products, X and Y. The company president, Gene Mutation, is concerned about the fierce competition in the market for product X. He notes that competitors are selling X for a price well below Chromosome's price of P12.70. At the same time, he notes that competitors are pricing product Y almost twice as high as Chromosome's price of P12.50. - A carsharing organization is considering adding a new line of luxury cars to their offering. Thecarsharing rate structure is based on cost per hour and miles driven. Assume $4/gallon forgas. The chosen vehicle is a McMaster EP-1 sedan, which costs $52,400 new. Fueleconomy according to the Canadian government is 20 mpg city and 29 mpg highway, for acombined fuel economy of 24 mpg; you can use the 24 mpg value for purposes of calculatingfuel costs in the problem.Since the vehicle is valuable, collision insurance is expensive, so the insurance cost is $4,800per year. The organization buys the vehicle from a dealer with an auto loan at 3.9% interest, with one annual payment per year. After 5 years of useful life, they sell the vehicle for$25,000, which can also be annualized at a 3.9% discount rate. Maintenance is expected tocost $800 per year. The car is expected to be driven by members 15,000 miles per year, andeach hour of reservation is expected to generate 6 miles of driving.The…arrow_forwardA company pays a sales representative 0.50 $ per kilometer in return for using its own car for company works. However, the company is considering another solution for this situation. So much so that the company will buy a car and make the car available to its representative. The data for this solution are as follows: The cost of buying such a car is 24,000 $ and it has a service life of 5 years. The market value at the end of this life is 7,000 $. The cost of keeping the car in a garage when it is not running is 2,500 $ per year, and the total fuel-tyre-maintenance costs are 0.30 $ per kilometer. If the interest rate is 15%, how many kilometers must the sales representative travel so that the costs of both methods are equal (break-even)? To do so Dell determined its need to design 25,000 new hybrid cooling fans. The company has two choices, either to Make, or Outsource the hybrid cooling fans. In the Making process, Dell must pay $5 per fan with a production line cost of $5,000. The process could be either a success or a failure, with a probability of 0.65 in case of success and 0.35 in case of failure. If the making process was successful, no additional fees will be incurred. On the other hand, if the process was a failure, then 15% of total fans made must be fixed with a fixing cost/defective fan of $3. In the outsourcing process, the cost per fan depends on the market conditions. According to previous studies, the market could have two approaches, the first approach will cost Dell $8 per fan, while the second market approach will cost Dell $4.5 per fan and a Tax of 13% &: • 20% defective fans with a…arrow_forward
- Please solve the question below. Aero Motorcycles is considering opening a new manufacturing facility in Fort Worth to meet the demand for a new line of solar-charged motorcycles (who wants to ride on a cloudy day anyway?) The proposed project has the following features; • The firm just spent $300,000 on a marketing study to determine consumer demand (@ t=0). • Aero Motorcycles purchased the land the factory will be built on 5 years ago for $2,000,000 and owns it outright (that is, it does not have a mortgage). The land has a current market value of $2,913,027. • The project has an initial cost of $20,000,000 (excluding land, hint: the land is not subject to depreciation). • If the project was undertaken, at t = 0 the company will need to increase its inventories by $3,500,000, accounts receivable by $1,500,000, and its accounts payable by $2,000,000. This net operating working capital will be recovered at the end of the project’s life (t =10). • If the project is undertaken, the…arrow_forwardStanton Inc. is considering adding a new product line (the product code is XYZ). The company has spent total of $150,000 so far for research and development for this product, and just paid another $50,000 to a consulting firm to do the marketing research. The consulting firm has estimated that the product will have a very short life of only 3 years. It has also estimated that the annual sales volume will be 50,000 units and the selling price is $50 per unit. Further it has predicted that the sales volume of a current product will drop by 10,000 units because XYZ can substitute the current product. The selling price for the current product is $35 per unit. The Production Department of Stanton has calculated that it needs a new machine for XYZ production. The total costs, including installation and shipping, for the machine are $1,000,000. Stanton uses the MACRS method to depreciate all of its assets (see depreciation rates in the table below), and it expects that the machine will last 5…arrow_forwardOne Manila Inc.'s president, Zane Cruz, is concerned about the prospects of one of the firm's major products. The president has been reviewing a marketing report with Jom Lara, marketing product manager, for their top-of-the-line stereo amplifier. The report indicates another price reduction is needed to meet anticipated competitors' reduction in sales prices. The current selling price for OMI's amplifier is P35,000 per unit. It is expected that within three months OMI's two major competitors will be selling their comparable amplifiers for P30,000 per unit. This concerns CRUZ because OMI's current cost of producing the amplifiers is P31,500, which yields a P3,500 profit on each unit sold. The situation is especially disturbing because OMI had implemented an activity-based costing (ABC) system about two years ago. The ABC system helped them better identify costs, cost pools, cost drivers, and cost reduction opportunities. Changes made when adopting ABC reduced costs on this…arrow_forward
