Chapter 55.4, Problem 1SB
Summary Introduction
To review:
The categories used by IUCN to assign the status of species and higher taxa.
Introduction:
IUCN stands for “International Union for Conservation of Nature,” which is a nonprofit organization (NGO) that helps to determine the status of the living organisms. The IUCN sponsors scientific researches and organizes conferences to discuss environmental challenges. It was formed in 1948 and its headquarter is located in Switzerland. IUCN also approaches to provide practical solutions to the environmental problems, besides holding conferences and scientific researches.

- Bob Davison describes the Endangered Species Act (ESA) as an effective tool for conserving biological diversity. What is his rationale for the value of focusing on individual species? The public is not concerned about the economic costs of individual species recovery. A focus on individual species is cheaper than protecting entire ecosystems. Establishing public empathy for charismatic species provides an opportunity to educate people about lesser-known species. The public tends to value intact ecosystems over particular plant and animal species.arrow_forwardEcologists use a rank-abundance curve to display relative species abundance, which is a component of biodiversity. It can also be used to demonstrate species richness and evenness. Figure 1 shows the rank- abundance curve for caddisflies (Order Trichoptera) of two aquatic habitats in northern Portugal (data from L.S.W. Tera). Pollution of streams, on the other hand, reduces the diversity of Trichoptera and several other groups of stream insects, reducing both species richness and species diversity. Interpret why those happened. These rank-abundance curves show that the mountain stream caddisfly community has higher species richness and greater species evenness. 0.1 - Mountain stream 0.01 Greater richness and species evenness 0,001 Coastal ponds 0.0001 20 40 60 80 Abundance rank Figure 1: Rank-abundance curve for caddisflies (Order Trichoptera) of two aquatic habitats in northern Portugal (data from L.S.W. Opportunists by nature, raccoons forage on a variety of plants and animals in their ecosystem. Highly inquisitive and intelligent, raccoons use their opposable thumbs to crack open shells, investigate dens, and sift through rocky streams in search of crayfish. Although their habitats are shrinking, raccoons have adapted well to human encroachment and will actively seek food and shelter among the human communityarrow_forward
