Modeling Alzheimer’s disease As the baby boomer generation ages and the proportion of the U.S. population over age 65 increases, the number of Americans with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia is projected to grow each year. The table below gives the millions of U.S. citizens age 65 or older with Alzheimer’s for selected years from 2000 and projected to 2050.
(a) Find the exponential function that models the data, with x equal to the number of years past 2000 and y equal to the millions of Americans with Alzheimer’s.
(b) Is the model in part (a) an exponential growth or exponential decay function?
(c) Graph the model and the data on the same axes.
(d) How many Americans are projected to have Alzheimer’s in 2060?
Year | 2000 | 2010 | 2020 | 2030 | 2040 | 2050 |
Millions | 4.5 | 5.1 | 5.7 | 7.7 | 11.0 | 13.2 |
