Concept Introduction:
Isotopes are properties of an element having different atomic mass but same atomic number.
Like: hydrogen, deuterium and tritium.
Each element has an isotopes, isotopes are responsible for the mass of an element to be taken as fraction. Isotopes of the element has some of the property are similar to each other.
Isotopic species has same atomic number means number of proton but number of neutron is different.

- 2.11 Define the term isotope.arrow_forwardSee the definition for isobars in Question 15. Consider Cr-54, Fe-54, Fess, and Ni-S8. (a) Which of these are isobars? Which are isotopes? (b) What do Fe-S4 and Fe-58 have in common? (c) Which atoms have the same number of neutrons?arrow_forwardTwo elements, R and Q, combine to form two binary compounds. In the first compound, 14.0 g of R combines with 3.00 g of Q. In the second compound, 7.00 g of R combines with 4.50 g of Q. Show that these data are in accord with the law of multiple proportions. If the formula of the second compound is RQ, what is the formula of the first compound?arrow_forward
- How do isotopes of a given element differ? How are they similar?arrow_forwardTwo compounds of iron and chlorine, A and B, contain 1.270 g and 1.904 g of chlorine, respectively, for each gram of iron. Show that these amounts are in the ratio 2 : 3. Is this consistent with the law of multiple proportions? Explain.arrow_forwardRead the “Chemistry in Focus” segmentIsotope Tales. Define the termisotope, and explain how isotopes can he used to answer scientific and historical questions.arrow_forward
- 2.90 Naturally occurring europium has an average atomic weight of 151.964 amu. If the only isotopes of europium present are 151Eu and 153Eu, describe how you would determine the relative abundance of the two isotopes. Include in your description any information that would need to be looked up.arrow_forwardCobalt has three radioactive isotopes used in medical studies. Atoms of these isotopes have 30, 31, and 33 neutrons, respectively. Give the complete symbol for each of these isotopes.arrow_forwardScientists J. J. Thomson and William Thomson (Lord Kelvin) made numerous contributions to our understanding of the atom’s structure. Which subatomic particle did J. J. Thomson discover, and what did this lead him to postulate about the nature of the atom? William Thomson postulated what became known as the “plum pudding” model of the atom’s structure. What did this model suggest?arrow_forward
