Several years ago, management at Tuglar Corporation established a grievance committee composed of employees who volunteered to work toward the amicable resolution of disputes between Tuglar management and its employees. Each year management issue a call for volunteers to serve on the grievance committee, and 10 of the respondents are randomly selected to serve on the committee for the upcoming year.
Employees in the Accounting Department are distressed because no member of their department has served on the Tuglar grievance committee in the past five years. Management has assured its employees in the Accounting Department that the selections have been made randomly, but these assurances have not quelled suspicions that management has intentionally omitted accountants from the committee. The table below summarizes the total number of volunteers and the number of employees from the Accounting Department who have volunteered for the grievance committee in each of the past five years:
In its defense, management has provided these numbers to the Accounting Department. Given these numbers, is the lack of members of the Accounting Department on the grievance committee for the past five years suspicious (i.e., unlikely)?
Managerial Report
In addressing the issue of whether or not the committee selection process is random, consider the following questions:
- 1. How is the number of members of the Accounting Department who are selected to serve on the grievance committee distributed?
- 2. Using the
probability distribution you identified in (1), what is the probability for each of these five years that no member of the Accounting Department has been selected to serve? - 3. Using the probabilities you identified in (2), what is the probability that no member of the Accounting Department has been selected to serve during the past five years?
- 4. What is the cause of the lack of Accounting Department representation on the grievance committee over the past five years? What can be done to increase the probability that a member of the Accounting Department will be selected to serve on the grievance committee using the current selection method?

The commission wants to know whether the proportion of people who live in the northern part of the state and are in favor of removing the cash lane is different from the proportion of people who live in the southern part of the state and are in favor of removing the cash lane. Independent random samples are selected from the northern and southern parts of the state. The table summarizes the responses of those surveyed. Many believe this number is inflated by the proportion of 22- to 30-year-old job seekers who use social media in their job search. In addition, 277 of the 370 respondents indicated they have electronically submitted a resume to an employer. (a) Conduct a hypothesis test to determine if the results of the survey justify concluding the proportion of 22- to 30-year-old job seekers who use social media in their job search exceeds the proportion of the population that use social media in their job search. At that time, Robert Rust, the original owner, decided to establish two classes of stock. The first represents Class A founders' stock and is entitled to six votes per share. The normally traded common stock, designated as Class B, is entitled to one vote per share. In late 2010, Mr. Stone, an investor, was considering purchasing shares in Rust Pipe Co. While he knew the existence of founders' shares were not often present in other companies, he decided to buy the shares anyway because of a new technology Rust Pipe had developed to improve the flow of liquids through pipes. Of the 1,300,000 total shares currently outstanding, the original founder's family owns 51,525 shares. What is the percentage of the founder's family votes to Class B votes? - A small retailer was planning to buy a new vehicle for his business. He estimated the price of his dream vehicle as 2.4 million rupees, but unable to purchase it so far due to the financial constraints he faced. Now due to the changes in the import policies of the new government, different people argue that prices of the vehicle have also changed. Therefore, in order to test whether the price of his dream vehicle has changed or not, he checked the prices of 18 such vehicles (in million rupees) advertised in the weekend newspaper and the sample mean was = 2.14 and standard deviation was 0.22. Test at 5% level of significance whether the price of his dream vehicle has changed?arrow_forwardWhen applying for insurance, potential cus- tomers are asked if they have good or bad credit. Just before approving the new cus- tomer, the insurance company orders a credit report to verify the customer's actual credit rating. Historically, 49% of customers with bad credit claim they have good credit and 12% of customers with good credit misreport they have bad credit. If the insurance com- pany has set its credit standards so that 51% of approved customers have good credit, what is the probability an approved customer has good credit, given that they claimed to have good credit during the application process? The first women (Woman 1) is arriving on a flight from Atlanta, the second (Woman 2) is arriving on a flight from Dallas, and the third (Woman 3) is arriving on a flight from Chicago. Historical data suggests that the Atlanta flight is “on time” 90% of the time, the Dallas flight is “on time” 95% of the time, and the Chicago flight is “on time” 80% of the time. Furthermore, historical data suggests that the three flights are independent with respect to on time behavior. Define the sample space for this random experiment.
