Chapter 5, Problem 2WIO
Summary Introduction

To determine:

How photosynthesis on a planet around a star other than sun might would be different and similar to photosynthesis on earth.

Concept introduction:

Photosynthesis is a process that takes place in green plants to construct complex organic compounds from water and carbon dioxide with the help of chlorophyll and sunlight. The whole process completes in two steps; light reaction and dark reaction. ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production takes place in the light reaction of photosynthesis. This ATP is used to reduce CO2 to form carbohydrate in the dark reaction.

The law of conservation of matter states that no matter on earth can be created or destroyed. Using the following equation: 6H2O + 6CO2 + Sunlight—> C6H12O6 + 6O2, explain how the process of photosynthesis is an example of this.
The substance dichlorophenyldimethylurea (DCMU) is an herbicide thatinhibits photosynthesis by blocking electron transfer between plastoquinones in photosystem II.(a) Would you expect DCMU to interfere with cyclic photophosphorylation?(b) Normally, DCMU blocks O2 evolution, but addition of ferricyanide to chloroplasts allows O2 evolution in the presence of DCMU. Explain.
(a) It can be argued that, if life were to exist elsewhere in the universe, it would require some process like photosynthesis. Why is this argument reasonable? (b) If the starship Enterprise were to land on a distant planet and find no measurable oxygen in the atmosphere, could the crew conclude that photosynthesis is not taking place?
