Concept explainers
The cells are the basic unit that makes up the body of a human. Cells grow and divide to create a new cell as the body required them. Cancer starts when genetic changes affect this orderly process and cells begin to grow uncontrollably. Abnormal growth of cell tissue is also referred to as a tumor.
Answer to Problem 1MWE
Tumor (that is) black is melanoma.
Explanation of Solution
Melanoma is a serious form of skin cancer. These cancers can grow when unrepaired damage of DNA in skin cells activates mutation. It will cause the skin cells to multiply quickly and form a malignant tumor. Malignant tumors are cancerous, and they can spread, grow and get worse. These tumors arise in the melanocytes that produce black pigments in the basal layer of the epidermis. When it is untreated on time, then it spread through the bloodstream and cause cancer in many organs in the body. It forms tumors that are commonly black or brown in the color. Therefore, it is also sometimes referred to as black tumors.
