Chapter 5, Problem 15PIAT
Summary Introduction

To review:

The conclusion about the fructose-fed mice versus those without fructose from the given data in graph and impact of omega-3 fatty acids on memory in this test.

Introduction:

Fructose is a simple fruit sugar mainly found in plants and is a ketonic monosaccharide. Omega-3 fatty acids are classified as the polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are mainly found in walnuts, fish, and canola oil.

Animal models are generally used to study the effect of the diet on the health of an individual. A trained mice to escape a maze chamber was used to study the effects fructose consumption on the memory. In the experiment the mice was fed with chow, which was supplemented with omega-3-fatty acid, fructose solution or both.

The results obtained after 6 months have been shown below in the form of a bar graph. In the graph shown below, * represents the probability value less than 0.05 and ** represents the probability value less than 0.01.

Briefly discuss the effect of salt, pH and temperature on the action of salivary amylase. Then, list TWO possible errors in this experiment. Suggest how these errors could be prevented.
Emanuel's body metabolizes caffeine at a rate of 14.4% per hour (so the amount of caffeine in Emanuel's body decreases by 14.4% each hour). a. If Emanuel consumes a cup of coffee with 86 mg of caffeine in it, how long will it take for Emanuel's body to metabolize half of the 86 mg of caffeine? hours Preview b. If Emanuel consumes an energy drink with 210 mg of caffeine in it, how long will it take for Emanuel's body to metabolize half of the 210 mg of caffeine? hours Preview c. If Emanuel consumes a cup of coffee with c mg of caffeine in it, how long will it take for Emanuel's body to metabolize half of the c mg of caffeine? (Hint: Your answer will be a numerical value.) hours Preview
Which of the following statements are true? (This is a multi- select question, select all that apply). Carbohydrates serve mainly for short-term energy storage; TAGs serve mainly for long-term energy storage. Both carbohydrates and TAGS serve other important roles, such as in molecular recognition. Both carbohydrates and TAGS serve important roles as second messengers. Carbohydrates can be used to produce ATP much more quickly than TAGS can. TAGS are a much more efficient way to store energy (you can get more ATP on a "per weight" basis).
