Explanation of Solution

Write the relation for the orbital speed at the surface of planet.

    Vc=GMr        (1)

Here, Vc is orbital speed at the surface of the planet, G is gravitational constant, M is mass of the planet, r is radius of the orbit.

In this case, the radius of the orbit is equal to the radius of the planet.

The mass of earth is (M=5.97×1024kg)

The orbital speed at the surface of Mercury:

Substitute 0.055M for M, 6.67×1011m3/s2kg for G, 2440km for r in equation (1) to find Vc.

    Vc=(6.67×1011m3/s2kg)(0.055M)2440km=(6.67×1011m3/s2kg)(0.055×5.97×1024kg)(2440km)(103m1km)2996m/s

The orbital speed at the surface of Venus:

Substitute 0.815M for M, 6.67×1011m3/s2kg for G, 6052km for r in equation (1) to find Vc.
