Chapter 49, Problem 10TYU
Summary Introduction

To explain: The benefits and problems of technology that can scan the brain activity to detect an individual’s particular emotions and thought processes.

Introduction:

Emotions generation and their experience depend upon many brain structures such as amygdala, hippocampus and parts of the thalamus. Several approaches are available to scan the brain activity such as positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). It is possible to scan the emotions and thought process from outside of the body.

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY With increasinglysophisticated methods for scanning brain activity, scientistsare developing the ability to detect an individual’s particularemotions and thought processes from outside the body. Whatbenefits and problems do you envision when such technologybecomes readily available? Explain.
In PET scans, red areas are brain regions that are most active, while blue, yellow, and green areas are least active. Figure 13.24 shows PET scans of normal brain activity (left) and (right) of the brain of a person while using cocaine. The frontal lobes of the brain hemispheres are toward the top of the scans. Their neurons play major roles in reasoning and other intellectual functions. Looking at these scan images, how do you suppose cocaine may affect mental functioning?
Pick a human neuroscience research technique and describe two limitations or drawbacks of that technique. Remember that if I’m asking you to describe, you should be writing a little more and not just listing things.
