Chapter 4.4, Problem 1RIA
Summary Introduction

A hair-like appendages or external structure present on the surface of many bacteria is known as a pilus. A pilus is a thin, rigid fiber composed of protein, which protrudes from the bacterial cell surface. The pili plays a major role to attach a bacterial cell to the surface of other cells or surfaces.  It also helps in attaching among microbial cells.

A strain of Moraxella catarrhalis is able to grow on agar containing the antibiotic amoxicillin. You suspect this strain may contain the enzyme B-lactamase which inactivates amoxicillin, making it ineffective as an antibiotic. You grow the same strain in media containing amoxicillin and clavulanic acid (a B-lactamase inhibitor). What do expect the results to be; growth or no growth?
