Chapter 43, Problem 2AL
Summary Introduction

Bioremediation of soil is a biological process that is used to degrade, transform, breakdown, or to essentially remove the contaminants from the soil. It is a natural process which relies on plants, bacteria, and fungi to alter the contaminants. The metabolic processes of these organisms use the contaminants as an energy source and make them harmless or less toxic products.

You're in charge of bioremediation of jet fuel-contaminated soil. Your colleague advises that you add nitrogen and phosphate to the soil to encourage the development of naturally existing hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria. However, you've just read about a new microbe slurry containing nutrients and a surfactant that's being marketed. What information do you need to gather in order to choose the best course of action? How are you going to get these numbers?
Assuming you are working in a microbiology laboratory and a client sent you a sample for the following analyses A)Identification of all microorganisms in the soil sample B) Enumeration of culturable bacteria in the sample C) Enumeration of both culturable and non-culturable bacteria in the sample For a to c, explain the following: Method of analyses to be used
You were tasked to aseptically collect different environmental samples from a quarry site and process them back in the laboratory for microbial cultivation and analysis. After all the thorough experiments, you were only able to cultivate and study 36 microorganisms. However, based on the metagenomic analysis conducted, there are about 140 other species present in the samples collected. Why is this the case? Discuss and expound on the possible reason
