Chapter 40, Problem 1CT
Summary Introduction
To determine:
The role of natural selection and sexual selection in case of male guppies whose habitat has been changed and resulted in the development of more colorful male guppies.
Introduction:
Natural selection is the mechanism of evolution in which species adapt to their environment. The most suited individuals have better chances of survival than others which do not adapt to the environment. Sexual selection is the mode of natural selection. It defines that few individuals in the population out-reproduce other individuals due to their characteristics.

Is sexual selection or natural selection the driver for the differences between males and females?
a. In the hollyhock weevil (Rhopalapion longirostre) the females a have much longer rostrum. The length of rostrum is correlated with offspring survival but not
mating frequency.
b. In the marine iguana species (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) on the islands near Ecuador the males often exceed expected size on a given island. Male size is
correlated with survival and number of mating events.
Robins typically lay four eggs. Four eggs allow the offspring to be well fed, whereas larger clutches may result in malnourished chicks that have a lower chance of survival. Fewer than four eggs per clutch may result in no surviving offspring if the eggs are preyed upon. Which type of pattern of natural selection MOST LIKELY acts to keep four eggs the most common clutch size?
Darwin’s finches have different beaks in terms of size and shape to be able to eat different food sources like insects, nectar, and seeds. Cactus finches have longer, more pointed beaks to probe cactus flowers compared to their relatives, the ground finches.
If a plant disease killed a large portion of the cacti on the Galapagos islands, what would the future populations of finches look like in terms of beak size and shape? Use your knowledge of natural selection to determine which option is most likely.
Ground finches would survive and pass on their shorter and wider beaks, so there would be a higher proportion of finches in future generations that have short and wide beaks.
Ground finches would survive and pass on their beaks, but they would mate with the remaining cactus finches, creating a new hybrid that is somewhere between short versus long and narrow versus wide.
Cactus finches would compete for food with ground finches and exhibit resource partitioning, so the beaks…

- Monarch butterflies and viceroy butterflies are both found in the United States and parts of Canada and Mexico. Monarch butterflies have a particular orange and black wing pattern and are toxic. Viceroy butterflies are non-toxic but have a very similar wing pattern to the monarch. Scientists have observed that attempted predation of viceroy butterflies is lower in regions that are also inhabited by monarch butterflies. Why would natural selection select for a non-poisonous butterfly with the same markings as a poisonous butterfly?arrow_forwardIf natural selection has no foresight, how can it explain features that seem to prepare organisms for future events? For example, deciduous trees at high latitudes drop their leaves before winter arrives, male birds establish territories before females arrive in the spring, and animals such as squirrels and jays store food as winter approaches.arrow_forwardDiscuss how movement and migration behaviors are a result of natural selectionarrow_forward
- A polar bear is leaving the ice caps because they are melting. The polar bear enters a wooded area with limited snow. Describe how natural selection would affect the polar bear's relationship with its ecological surroundings.arrow_forwardDefine natural selection using the 5 points below to explain its role in understanding primate behavior. (1) there is variation among individuals; (2) some of that variation is heritable; (3) there is always competition between individuals for resources; (4) some variants outcompete other variants and leave more offspring; (5) to the extent that the parent's traits are heritable, then a larger portion of the next generation will reflect those traits.arrow_forwardWhich of these interactions are examples of sexual selection? Select all that apply. A change in food resources on an island favors finches with medium-sized beaks. Finches with small and large beaks disappear from the island after a few generations. Female flies prefer to mate with males that have longer eyestalks. These eyestalks provide no survival advantage, but longer eyestalks become more common over generations. Male seals compete for territory and access to clusters of female seals. The more aggressive male seals tend to secure the largest territories and clusters.arrow_forward
- Ecology regarding sexual selection: In zebra finch females prefer males who have a larger yellow cheek patch. Researchers investigating this preference think that females must benefit from choosing males with large cheek patches. By contracting muscles within their eyes, the lizards can rupture their sinus membranes and cause blood to squirt from their eye socket. This unique behaviour is used as a defense strategy. For natural selection to select for this trait, what must be true about this behaviour?arrow_forwardNatural and sexual selection both lead to evolution, but these processes can work against each other. - This discussion provides you with some data about four pools of guppies. These pools have different turbidity (i.e. cloudiness), make-up of predators, depths, locations, numbers of guppies, and contain bright or drab-colored male guppies. Observe the data given about the pools and note any patterns you see that might relate to the color patterns of the male guppies. Selection pressures are an aspect of the environment that causes a change in characteristics over time. Then you will decide which of the selection pressures on the male guppies have resulted in the variations in color patterns you see in the data. 1. Try to give a concise (short) but rich description of each of the four guppy pools 2. What selection pressures caused the variation in the color pattern of male guppies? Support your claims with evidence. 3. Is it better to be bright or drab if you are a male guppy? Support your claims with evidence.arrow_forwardThe Pipidae are a family of tongueless frogs that have one or more claws on their toes. While observing these frogs, you notice that males with more claws had more opportunities to mate and father more offspring. You hypothesize that these frogs evolved to have more claws as an adaptive trait to improve reproductive success. To test this hypothesis, you must: 1.look for evidence of multiple claws in ancestors of Pipidae 2.determine if the number of claws is heritable 3.test whether other these males have any other adaptive traits 4.test whether males with no claws are able to matearrow_forwardAssume you are studying a species of slug where the eggs are fertilized and transferred to the male. As a result the male is not able to increase reproductive success by mating with multiple partners. Therefore which of the following about sexual selection in this species is not true? Females are more likely to develop traits that signal genetic quality to males. Females will be able to increase reproductive success with increased mating partners. Sexual selection in males will lead them to be choosy with what females they mate with. Sexual selection in males will lead them to mate indiscriminately when they find a female.arrow_forward
