Chapter 4, Problem 62P
A study [12] of incidence rates of blindness among insulin-dependent diabetics reported that the annual incidence rate of blindness per year was 0.67% among 30- to 39-year-old male insulin-dependent diabetics (IDDM) and 0.74% among 30- to 39-year-old female insulin-dependent diabetics.
After how many years of follow-up would we expect the cumulative incidence of blindness to be 10% among 30-year-old IDDM females, if the incidence rate remains constant over time?

Could it be that smoking actually increases survival rates among women? The accompanying data represent the 20-year survival status and smoking status of
1334 women who participated in a 20-year cohort study. Complete parts (a) through (e).
A pharmaceutical company is testing a new drug for a rare disease. In a clinical trial, 1000 patients
with the disease were randomly assigned to receive either the new drug or a placebo. After one
year, it was found that 60% of the patients who received the new drug experienced improvement,
compared to only 40% of those who received the placebo. Is the difference in improvement rates
statistically significant? Provide your rationale.
A better drug? In a pilot study, a company's new
cholesterol-reducing drug outperforms the currently
available drug. If the data provide convincing evi-
dence that the mean cholesterol reduction with the
new drug is more than 10 milligrams per deciliter
of blood (mg/dl) greater than with the current drug,
the company will begin the expensive process of
mass-producing the new drug. For the 14 subjects
who were assigned at random to the current drug,
the mean cholesterol reduction was 54.1 mg/dl with
a standard deviation of 11.93 mg/dl. For the 15 sub-
jects who were randomly assigned to the new drug,
the mean cholesterol reduction was 68.7 mg/dl with
a standard deviation of 13.3 mg/dl. Graphs of the
data reveal no outliers or strong skewness.
Carry out an appropriate significance test. What
conclusion would you draw? (Note that the null
hypothesis is not Ho: μμ2=0.)
Based on your conclusion in part (a), could you have
made a Type I error or a Type II error? Justify your
answer.

A growing body of evidence has been generated indicating that the fetus, infant, and young child are especially susceptible to environmental toxicants as diverse as pesticides, mercury, lead, and environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). About 5 million children in the United States suffer from childhood asthma. This statistic has increased 160% over the last 15 years. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) would like your help in trying to figure out why asthma rates, in particular, are on the rise? In the article “Height and Weight at Various Ages and Risk of Breast Cancer” (Annals of Epidemiology, Vol. 2, pp. 597–609), L. Brinton and C. Swanson discussed the relationship between height and breast cancer. The study, sponsored by the National Cancer Institute, took 5 years and involved more than 1500 women with breast cancer and 2000 women without breast cancer; it revealed a trend between height and breast cancer: “. . . taller women have a 50 to 80 percent greater risk of getting breast cancer than women who are closer to 5 feet tall.” Christine Swanson, a nutritionist who was involved with the study, added, “. . . height may be associated with the culprit, . . . but no one really knows” the exact relationship between height and the risk of breast cancer. a.
