Chapter 4, Problem 29P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

For the following compound provide the name or the formula of the compound -

  1. AgNO2
  2. Lithium Chromate
  3. (NH4)2SO3
  4. Magnesium hydrogen Carbonate
  5. Copper (I) Phosphate
  6. AI(MnO4)3

Concept introduction:

An ion is a group of atoms where the number of proton is different from the number of electrons. A positive ion or a cation is known as where the proton’s numbers is greater than the electrons. A negative ions or anion where number of electrons are more than the number of proton.

When an atom donates an electron, it has positive charge and when an atom accepts the negative charge then it has a negative charge.

Binary ionic compounds comprise two elements only in which one is cation and another is anion. It is vital to know that while writing the name of binary ionic compound always cation comes first.

Polyatomic ions are the ions which contains more than one atom. Like NO3- contain one nitrogen and three oxygen atoms. In the polyatomic ions the atoms are generally bonded covalently to each other and thus stay together as a one charged unit.
