Introduction: Carbohydrates are organic molecules that are made of hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen molecules. Carbohydrates are also known as sugar molecules. Monosaccharide and disaccharides are small molecules. Polysaccharides are large carbohydrate molecules. The major function of carbohydrate is that it acts as major energy source. Breakdown of carbohydrates provides starch and sugar molecules, which are the primary source of energy.
Answer to Problem 1TF
Correct answer: The statement is false.
Explanation of Solution
Lactose is a disaccharide which is predominantly present in milk. Hence, it is called milk sugar. The enzyme lactase breaks down lactose. For some individuals, the amount of lactase present in the digestive tract decreases that leads to maldigestion of lactose. Thus, the undigested lactose draws water into the digestive tract and cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, flatulence, and bloating. This condition is called lactose intolerant.
If lactose-intolerant people want to enjoy the dairy foods without side-effects, lactose reduced dairy products are available in super markets. Consuming in smaller amounts throughout the day is better than consuming larger part of lactose containing food at one time. Intake of these foods items with meal or snack can be better tolerated. Doctors prescribe lactase pills that can be consumed with meals containing lactose to overcome lactose intolerance. Thus, many products are available to help those who are lactose intolerant can enjoy dairy foods. Hence, the given statement is false.
