Chapter 36, Problem 8P
A student holds a laser that emits light of wavelength λ. The laser beam passes through a pair of slits separated by a distance d, in a glass plate attached to the front of the laser. The beam then falls perpendicularly on a screen, creating an interference pattern on it. The student begins to walk directly toward the screen at speed v. The central maximum on the screen is stationary. Find the speed of the mth-order maxima on the screen, where m can be very large.

A mirror faces a cliff located some distance away.
Mounted on the cliff is a second mirror, directly
opposite the first mirror and facing toward it. A gun
is fired very close to the first mirror. The speed of
sound is 342 m/s. How many times does the flash of
the gunshot travel the round-trip distance between

A train is moving at a speed of v towards the railwayman next to the
rails. The train whistles for a time of T. How long does the railwayman hear the
whistle? The speed of sound is c= 330 m/s; v=108 km/hour= 3) m/s, T= 3s; the
train does not reach the railwayman until the end of the whistle.

A LASER is a source of very intense, monochromatic, and unidirectional beam of light. These properties of a laser light can be exploited to measure long distances. The distance of the Moon from the Earth has been already determined very precisely using a laser as a source of light. A laser light beamed at the Moon takes 2.56 s to return after reflection at the Moon’s surface. How much is the radius of the lunar orbit around the Earth ?

The crate has a height H and rolls toward the wall with a constant speed v, starting from the light S at time t = 0. The light S is a fixed distance d from the wall. Determine the speed at which the top of the crate's shadow moves down the wall as a function of time, vs(t). Your answer should be an expression in terms of t, v, d and H. Distracted by the noise, you go to see what is on the screen. The game involves trying to fly a spacecraft through a crowded field of asteroids in the asteroid belt around the Sun. The asteroid belt is not that crowded and you don’t have to maneuver through it like that!” Distracted by your statement, he accidentally allows his spacecraft to strike an asteroid, just missing the high score. He turns to you in disgust and says, “Yeah, prove it.” You say, “Okay, I’ve learned recently that the highest concentration of asteroids is in a doughnut-shapedregion between the Kirkwood gaps at radii of 2.06 AU and 3.27 AU from the Sun.
