Question
Chapter 36, Problem 1MM
Summary Introduction
Concept introduction: The James–Lange theory is a hypothesis on the basis of the nature of emotions. The James–Lange theory is one of the most basic theories of emotion in modern psychology. This idea was independently developed by the psychologist, William James and the Danish physiologist, Carl Lange.
Expert Solution & Answer

Answer to Problem 1MM
Correct answer: The James-Lange theory of emotions maintains that a physiological response happens BEFORE we know what we are feeling.
Explanation of Solution
The James–Lange theory hypothesize that an emotion is experienced by a person only after the occurrence of a physiological manifestation in the body. According to this theory, when a person gets an arousal on an event, some physiological manifestations are created in our body (increased heart beat, excess perspiration, muscular tension, and so on) by the action of autonomic nervous system. After the event of physical changes, the brain interprets these reactions as emotions.
