Summary Introduction

Introduction:

Disinfection process is used for the removal of pathogenic bacteria. However, it does not remove all the microbial forms. It cannot remove microbial spores. For example, alcohol can kill pathogenic microbes. It can be applied only to inanimate objects and can reduce the number of bacteria. Alcohol is the best antiseptic that is easily available and inexpensive.

Attached below is the study about the effects of handwashing and the effectiveness of soap against bacteria. What conclusions can be generated from this result? (see rubrics for the point marking) A before washing hands C 10 second hand wash B D hot water only rinse 30 second hand wash Figure 8: Agar plates with bacteria A) before washing hands B) after rinsing hands in hot water C) After washing hands with soap for 10 seconds and D) after washing hands for 30 seconds. Images show that the number of bacteria on the plate are not greatly reduced after a hot water rinse or 10 second handwash but bacterial levels are reduced after a proper hand wash for 30 seconds.
For bacteria to infect cells, it produces an extracellular protease that destroys tissue structure particularly transmembrane proteins. The bacteria are grown in culture so that the protease can be isolated. Then the culture is centrifuged. In which sample would the protease be most likely found? A. Precipitate containing whole bacteria B. Cell-free filtrate; that is, the supernatant C. The lysate of the whole culture D. Lysed bacteria only E. All of these
What is the difference between an antiseptic and a disinfectant?  A. Antiseptics are used against microbes on non living objects, disinfectants are used on living tissue.  B. Antiseptics are used against microbes outside the body, and disinfectants are used inside the body.  C. Antiseptics are used against microbes inside the body, disinfectants are used outside the body.  D. Antiseptics are bactericidal against microbes, disinfectants are bacteriostatic.  E. Antiseptics are used against microbes on living tissue, disinfectants are used on non living objects.
