A hiker walks 90.0m due west, 50.0m due north and 40.0m at a heading of 45.0 degrees north of east. Find the hiker's resultant displacement.
a. magnitude
b. degrees north of east
Three players on a reality TV show are brought to the center of a large, flat field. Each is given a meter stick, a compass, a calculator, and shovel, and the following three displacements:
A: 72.4m, 32.0˚ east of north
B: 57.3m, 36.0˚ south of west
C: 17.8m, due south
The three displacements lead to the point in the field where the keys to a new Porsche are buried. Two players start measuring immediately, but the winner first calculates where to go. What does she calculate?
Displacement vector A is 4.5 km, north. Displacement vector B is 3.0 km, 50° north of west.
Find the resultant displacement using the laws of sines and cosines. Do not forget to use the
graph for polygon method.
