Chapter 33, Problem 10TE
Solution

To determine: The time for a burnt-out collapsing star takes to rekindle itself.

Answer:

The time for a burnt-out collapsing star takes to rekindle itself takes only hours or days.

Explanation:

At the end of the life of the star, first the hydrogen is burnt, then the Helium and, in last, the Carbon burns. In a star, there is a continuous force IN and forces OUT acting under the Hydrostatic equilibrium. The force inside the star is gravity; the force outside the star is pressure from the explosive inner reactions. When the life of the star comes to an end, it swells into a big red bubble.

In the end, there is a 'rebound' effect. The pressure outside suddenly nearly finishes and gravity pulls everything inside and then rebounds outwards. This is the main reason for nova and leaves a core remaining. This process takes only hours or days.

Conclusion:

Therefore, the time for a burnt-out collapsing star takes to rekindle itself takes only hours or days.
