Activity is related to decay constant as follows:

  A=λN  .......(1)

Here, N is number of atoms.

For radioactive decay, order of the reaction is first order thus,

  λ=0.6932t1/2  .......(2)

Here, t1/2 is half-life time.

Calculations:

Combining equation (1) and (2),

  A=0.6932t1/2×N

Putting the values,

  60 decays=0.6932×N1.277×109 year

Or,

  60 decays=0.6932×N1.277×109 year(1 year365 days)(1 day24 h)(1 h60 min)(1 min60 s)60=1.721×1017×NN=601.721×1017=3.486×1018

Thus, the number of 1940K atoms is 3.486×1018 .

For 1 mol, there are 6.022×1023 number of atoms thus, number of moles corresponding to 3.486×1018 number of atoms will be:

  n=3.486×10186.022×1023 mol=0.5788×105 mol=5.8×106 mol
