To describe:
Self-administration of intranasal desmopressin (DDAVP). Function and priming of the pump. The important instructions that need to be given to the patient by the nurse just before administration of desmopressin.
Concept introduction:
Desmopressin (DDAVP) is a synthetic vasopressin (antidiuretic hormone) and decreases the production of urine. Desmopressin mimics the function of the antidiuretic hormone. Desmopressin is used for the treatment of diabetes insipidus associated with dehydration, polydipsia, and polyuria; hemophilia; gastrointestinal hemorrhage; and type I von Willebrand disease. Carbamazepine, demeclocycline, lithium, and alcohol interact with desmopressin and that affects the effect of desmopressin. The common side effects of desmopressin are increased blood pressure, low blood sodium, facial flushing, seizures, nausea, diarrhea, uterine cramping, and headache.
