Chapter 3, Problem 71A
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The law according to which in a compound, same elements are present in same proportion by mass needs to be determined.

Concept introduction:

A compound is formed when 2 or more elements combine. Thus, a chemical formula of compound can tell the different elements present in it.

Answer to Problem 71A

The law of definite proportions and also known as law of definite composition.

Explanation of Solution

For two same compounds, all the elements are present in same proportion by mass. For example, in H2O, the oxygen and hydrogen are combined in fixed proportion of mass. So, all the water molecules have the same proportion. If the proportion changes, the compound will not remains the same that is water or H2O.

Conclusion

Therefore, the law of definite proportion states that same elements in a compound are present in same proportion by mass
