Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The correct statement for difference between an ion and isotope is to be identified from the given options.
Concept introduction:
An atom consists of a nucleus and extranuclear space. The nucleus of an atom is composed of protons and neutrons, while the extra nuclear space contains electrons.
Atoms of an element can exist in more than one form. Each form is termed as an isotope and differs from other forms by the number of neutrons, while the number of protons and electrons are equal in all forms.
When an atom loses or gains an electron, it is termed as cation or anion, respectively. A cation bears a positive charge and has a greater number of protons than electrons. An anion bears a negative charge and has a lower number of protons than electrons.

- Scientists J. J. Thomson and William Thomson (Lord Kelvin) made numerous contributions to our understanding of the atom’s structure. Which subatomic particle did J. J. Thomson discover, and what did this lead him to postulate about the nature of the atom? William Thomson postulated what became known as the “plum pudding” model of the atom’s structure. What did this model suggest?arrow_forwardCobalt has three radioactive isotopes used in medical studies. Atoms of these isotopes have 30, 31, and 33 neutrons, respectively.
