Being part of the “Gators,” the University of Florida golfing team must play on a putting green with an alligator pit. Figure 3-22 shows an overhead view of one putting challenge of the team; an xy coordinate system is superimposed. Team members must putt from the origin to the hole, which is at xy coordinates (8 m, 12 m). Hut they can putt the golf Hall using only one or more of the following displacements, one or more times:
Figure 3-22 Question 3.
The pit is at coordinates (8 m, 6 m). If a team member putts the ball into or through the pit, the member is automatically transferred to Florida State University, the arch rival. What sequence of displacements should a team member use to avoid the pit and the school transfer?

- A skater glides along a circular path of radius 5.00 m in clockwise direction. ‘When he coasts around one- half of the circle, starting from the west point, find (a) the magnitude of his displacement vector and (b) how far he actually skated. (c) What is the magnitude of his displacement vector when he skates all the way around the circle and comes back to the west point?arrow_forwardTypical backyard ants often create a network of chemical trails for guidance. Extending outward from the nest, a trail branches (bifurcates) repeatedly, with 60° between the branches. If a roaming ant chances upon a trail, it can tell the way to the nest at any branch point: If it is moving away from the nest, it has two choices of path requiring a small turn in its travel direction, either 30° leftward or 30 rightward. If it is moving toward the nest, it has only one such choice. Figure shows a typical ant trail, with lettered straight sections of 1.9 cm length and symmetric bifurcation of 60°. The angle between path w and the y axis is 30°. What are the (a) magnitude and (b) angle (relative to the positive direction of the superimposed x axis) of an ant's displacement from the nest (find it in the figure) if the ant enters the trail at point A? - Three short flights takes an airplane to its final destination which is a city 500 km due 70^o south of east from the home airport. These trips are: 600 km east, 300 km south and a third unknown displacement. Using the graphical (polygon) method and a scale factor of 1 cm : 100 km, determine the magnitude and direction of the third displacement.arrow_forwardCIA and NSA launched a hiring program to new agents: to crack the safehouse of the nuclear launch codes. They were given hacking tools and random displacement as a starting point. Agent 1 is directed to 70m, 254; Agent 2 is directed to 93m, 130 and Agent 3 to 63m due south. The three displacements lead to the point in the field where the key to the nuclear launch codes of the United States is kept. Two agents did not use their noggin’ and started measuring immediately, but the winner of the code first calculated where to go. What was the calculated resultant of the winner?
