Concept introduction:
Each double bonded carbon atom is attached to two atoms or groups. A double bond will have two distinct configurations, if each double bonded carbon atoms is attached to non-identical atoms or groups. Even if one of the double bonded carbon atoms is attached to two identical atoms or groups, then that double bond will not have two distinct configurations.
