To explain: The differing effects of the two isomers of methamphetamine. One of the isomer is an illegal drug called as crank and the other one is a medicine for sinus congestion.
Introduction:
Isomers are the molecules that consist of same molecular formula, however they have different structures.
Explanation of Solution
The molecules possess different shapes and so, their structures are very important. If there is occurrence of even a smaller variation in the structure or the arrangement of atoms, then the isomers differ in their properties. Methamphetamine is known as a stimulating drug and is also known as crystal meth. It is legally used occasionally for the treatment of ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder). This drug is an addictive drug and is known as crank, in its smoked form.
Another isomer of this drug is used for treating the sinus congestions in people. As these two isomers are of the same compound, they function differently. The reason for their differing functions is their shapes. It is due to the shapes or conformations of a molecule or isomers that their functions differ because due to the alternating shapes, the properties of the molecules differ and hence their functions.

Tamiflu [part (a)] is the trade name of the antiviral agent oseltamivir, thought to be the most effective agent in treating influenza. One of the products of this hydrolysis reaction is the amino acid phenylalanine. Infants afflicted with phenylketonuria cannot metabolize this amino acid, so it accumulates, causing mental retardation. When the affliction is identified early, a diet limiting the consumption of phenylalanine (and compounds like aspartame that are converted to it) can make a normal life possible. Co,CH,CH3 NH2 b. - Dr. Margert is developing a chemical product that reduces the accumulation of lipids in the brains of children with Niemann-pick type C1 disease. She assumes her product is pure based on the measurements of physical properties such as boiling point and melting point. Unfortunately, clinical studies have shown that, in some cases, her chemical results in severe seizures and migraines. Which of the following is the most likely explanation? O The product contains enantiomers which have similar physical properties but different chemical properties. O The product is pure, but it is affecting people differently based on their alleles. O The product contains contaminants of a different chemical compound O The product contains a mixture of cis and trans isomers which have the same physical properties but different chemical properties.arrow_forwardWhen Alfred Werner was developing the field of coordination chemistry, it was argued by some that the optical activity he observed in the chiral complexes he had prepared was due to the presence of carbon atoms in themolecule.
