Carbohydrates are chemicals that contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen connected by bonds that break readily.

Explanation of Solution

The carbon-hydrogen bonds in carbohydrates break readily. The molecule breaks down into simpler molecules and more stable bonds are formed. Therefore, the breaking of the carbon-hydrogen bonds releases a lot of energy which can be used by the cells for fueling its metabolism. The fact that carbohydrates can be stored for future use is another reason why they are the ideal fuel for living organisms.

Conclusion

Carbohydrates release a lot of energy when the carbon-hydrogen bonds are broken to give simpler substances. This energy is used by cells. Further, carbohydrates can be stored for future use.
