Measuring drops. Medication is often delivered through an intravenous (IV) drip line that allows a prescribed amount of a drug to be administered at a fixed rate. In this medical context, the standard abbreviation for a drop is gtt(from the Latin gutta, for drop). Each delivery system has a particular frop factor, which is the number of drops per milliliter of solution (with units gtt/mL).
a. A particular macrodrip system has a drop factor of 20gtt/mL. how many drops are in a 0.5L bag of normal saline?
b. A particular macrodrip system has a drop factor of 60gtt/mL. How many drops are in a 1.5L bag of D5W (dextrose)solution?
c. Suppose an entire 1L bag of normal saline is administered in five hours through a system with a drop factor of 15gtt/mL. How many drops were delivered? What was the rate of infusion in gtt/min?

- Running Shoes. A shoe designer tests a new material for the soles of their most popular line of running shoes. She has 6 athletes run 100 miles with one of last years shoes and one of these new shoes, randomly assigning the new shoe to the left or right foot. Afterward, she measures the amount of wear on each of the shoes in millimeters. Test the claim that the amount of wear with the new material is different from the amount of wear with the old material.
