Concept introduction: The respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in the newborn causes neonatal morbidity and mortality. Premature infants are more prone to RDS. The occurrence of RDS in infants born at 29th week of gestation is 50-60%. It was previously known as hyaline membrane disease (HMD). After the introduction of antenatal steroid therapy and postnatal surfactant therapy, the deaths of preterm infants due to RDS have significantly reduced.
