To discuss:
The different types of lipoproteins as well as their role in cardiovascular disease and hyperlipidemia.
Concept introduction:
In the blood, there are two primary forms of lipids: triglycerides and cholesterol. Triglycerides serve as a source of energy for cells. It is stored in the liver adipose tissue. Cholesterol is involved in the formation of cell membranes, and it synthesizes the bile acids, and steroid hormone. Both the cholesterol and triglycerides are water-insoluble. They bind to the lipid transport proteins called as apolipoprotein. The composition of cholesterol and triglyceride with apolipoprotein is called a lipoprotein. The main function of lipoprotein is to transport the hydrophobic lipid into the blood.
