Chapter 27, Problem 13PCE
You are taking pictures of the beach at sunset Just before the Sun sets, a shutter speed of 1/100 and an aperture of f/11 produces a properly exposed picture. Shortly after the Sun sets, however your light meter indicates that the scene is only one-quarter as bright as before. (a) If you don’t change the aperture, what approximate shutter speed is needed for your second shot? (b) If, instead, you keep the shutter speed at 1/100 s, what approximate f -stop will be needed for the second shot?

An f/2.80 CCD camera has a 105 - mm focal length lens and can focus on objects from infinity to as near as 30.0 cm from the lens. (a) Determine the camera’s aperture diameter. Determine the (b) minimum and (c) maximum distances from the CCD sensor over which the lens must be able to travel during focusing. Note : “f/2.80” means “an f - number of 2.80.”
For a lens imaging an object: (a) what is the depth-of-focus (DOF) using the lens f# for
an object at infinity? (b) What is the depth-of-focus (DOF) using the image NA for an
object at 2f? Assume λ = 550 nm, a lens diameter D = 50 mm, and a focal length f = 100
mm in both cases. Why does the closer object have a larger DOF?

- A certain type of film requires an exposure time of 0.011 s with an f/11 lens setting. Another type of film requires twice the light energy to produce the same level of exposure. This is usually expressed as dioptric spread. For a typical +6.0 D lens, the focusing power for red light is +5.90, the power for green light is +6.00 D, and the power for blue light is +6.10. This gives a dioptric spread of 0.20 diopter. Suppose a myopic person is observing a distant object through this lens, and the green light of the image is in perfect focus. Assume a distance s′ = 1.7000 cm. How far in front of or behind the retina is the point of sharp focus for red light? For blue light? (In practice, this amount of dioptric spread is fine; eyeglass wearers don’tnotice anything less than a spread of 0.30 diopter.)arrow_forwardfo,1 1,900 mm. If the astronomer wants to produce the same light energy per unit area on the film, what should be the exposure time (in minutes) to photograph the same nebula with a smaller telescope, which has an objective with diameter D₂ = 60.0 mm diameter and a focal length f0,2 900 mm? min =arrow_forward
