Introduction:

The sponges (phylum Porifera) are simple invertebrate animals that live in an aquatic environment. All adult sponges are sessile, i.e., they live permanently attached to rocks or other submerged objects and hence lack motility. A few species can even bore into hard surfaces like clamshells, coral skeletons, and rock. Sponges have pores on their bodies and thus the name Porifera.
