Chapter 26.2, Problem 1MI
Summary Introduction

Chytrids are very unique among other members of fungi because they produce a spore with “a single, posterior, whiplash flagellum”. In chytrids, flagella serve to disperse spores. It is believed that once all fungi had flagella and they have lost flagella during the course of evolution. Chytrids are not monophyletic, however, they are derived from the early diverging fungal lineages that bear fungal spores. Free-living chytrids are called saprophytic, which live on animal or plant matter in the soil, mud, or fresh water.
