Chapter 26.1, Problem 2CC
Summary Introduction

To determine: The pair of radioisotope and decay product to be chosen for analysis, if a fossil is suspected to be 50 million years old.

Introduction: The age of a fossil can be estimated by analyzing the decay of radioisotopes present within the accompanying rock. This is known as radiometric dating. A radioisotope is defined as an unstable isotope of an element that decays spontaneously. Each radioisotope has a unique half-life. The half-life is defined as the time required by a radioisotope to decay to one-half of its initial quantity.

An organism dies, and its body leaves an impression in mud. Over time, the mud hardens into rock, and the impression becomes a fossil. Which kind of fossil was formed? A) cast B) mold C) original material D) trace fossil
In radiometric dating, scientists use the half-life of a radioactive isotope, to determine the approximate age of rocks, and the fossils that are embedded in them. Half-life is the time it takes for half of a radioactive element to become stable.Uranium 238 (238U) is a radioactive element that decays into Lead (206Pb) after 4.5 billion years. 6) Scientists found a fossil in a layer of rock that tested as 1/8th U and 7/8th Pb. What is the approximate age of the fossil? A) 562 million years old     B) 4.5 billion years old     C) 9 billion years old     D) 13.5 billion years old Not Graded
Explain why it is difficult to use carbon-14 dating on 100-million-year-old dinosaur fossils
