Answer to Problem 2TE

The primary waves reflect and refract when they move through the regions within the Earth and the secondary waves only reflect, which indicates the region within Earth is liquid.

Explanation of Solution

Primary waves are the fastest wave, but they are slowed and refracted at the mantle and core boundary at a depth of the Earth when they move within both mantle as well as core. Secondary waves are absorbed when they pass from mantle to core because shear waves cannot be transmitted through liquids. This is proof that the outer core does not behave like a strong substance. Secondary waves are not sent through the liquid outer core.

The seismic speed in Earth increments with profundity and refraction of waves causes the way followed by body waves to bend upward. Refraction has a significant effect on waves that movement through Earth.

Conclusion:

Therefore, the primary waves reflect and refract when they go through the regions within the earth and the secondary waves only reflect which indicates liquid.
