Chapter 25.7, Problem 14P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The isoprene units has to be marked in lycopene and β-carotene.

Concept Introduction:

Terpenes are made by joining five-carbon units, usually in a head to tail-fashion.

Monoterpenes are those terpenes with two isoprene units-have 10 carbons, sesquiterpenes have 15 carbons, diterpenes have 20 carbons, triterpenes have 30 carbons and tetraterpenes have 40 carbons.

Isopentenyl pyrophosphate is the five-carbon compound used for the biosynthesis of terpenes.

According to the isoprene rule, the isoprene units are terpenoids joined by head to tail linkage or 1-4-linkage.

Mark off the isoprene units in lycopene and β-carotene. Can you detect a similarity in the way in which squalene, lycopene, and β-carotene are biosynthesized?
Guaiol is a sesquiterpene alcohol found in cannabis and other plants. The structure of guaiol is drawn except for a missing CH3 group. If the isoprene units are joined in a head-to-tail fashion, draw a possible structure for guaiol that contains the additional CH3 group.
Draw a structure for 4-bromo-2-pentene where the double bond has a Z geometry and the chiral carbon an S configuration.
