Summary Introduction

Fungi are eukaryotic, spore-bearing organisms. They lack chlorophyll and have both sexual and asexual reproductive systems. There are numerous groups of organisms are classified under fungi, nearly 90,000 fungal species are described. Members of Ascomycota or ascomycetes are generally called sac fungi (due to their reproductive structure). Some ascomycetes are yeast such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Saccharomyces cerevisiae alternates between two states such as haploid and diploid.
