Chapter 25, Problem 22DQP

You are doing a review services and related tax work engagement for QC Construction Company. You have made extensive inquiries of management about their financial statements and have concluded that management has an excellent understanding of its business and is honest but is lacking in knowledge of technical accounting issues. In doing the review you determine the following:

  1. 1. Repairs and maintenance expense has increased significantly compared to the preceding year. The president states that this seems to have been a year with a lot of repairs, in part because their equipment is getting older.
  2. 2. Property tax expense is the same as last year even though QC purchased a new building, including the land. The president states that there are no real estate taxes on the new building and land until next year.
  3. 3. Based on your knowledge of the construction industry, you know that the pipes QC uses in construction have had a decrease in selling price to construction companies near the end of the current year. The president states that even though they have a large pipe inventory, it will all be used in the next year or two, so the current price doesn’t matter because they won’t need to buy any.
  4. 4. Accounts receivable has increased almost 25 percent compared to the previous year, but the allowance for uncollectible accounts has stayed the same. The president states that even though receivables have increased, they still expect uncollectible accounts to be less than the stated allowance.
  5. 5. In discussions with the president you determine that there is a material uninsured lawsuit against the company from a former customer. The president believes it is a frivolous lawsuit and will not permit a footnote about it for fear that it will result in similar lawsuits from other customers.

The client reports that the amount of inventory has increased drastically, even though sales have not increased and the account payable balance is almost the same as in previous years, this has led to suspicion of a double counting scheme in the client's inventory. In addition, when a random check was carried out incidentally at one of the client's warehouses, it was found that many inventory were out of date but the client did not make adjustments. Question:a. Jon Yanta, owner of Yanta’s Yard Care, is disappointed that his business incurred a net loss for June of the current year. Mr. Yanta would have preferred not to have to reduce his capital by $880.00. He knows that you are studying accounting, so Mr. Yanta asks you to analyze his work sheet for June. Review the statements provided in the worksheet, and based on your analysis of the work sheet, indicate the likely causes of the net loss for Yanta’s Yard Care as well as the steps Mr. Yanta can take to avoid a net loss in future months.   Select True or False for each of the given statements. You are an auditor at a public accounting firm. The client you are dealing with is a transportation service company. This client in the last few years has reported a loss on his income statement and this year is the first year the accounting firm you work for audits this client, previously for several years it was audited by other accounting firms. Surprisingly, this client in the financial year you audited reported a double increase in performance from the previous year. If in the previous year the company reported a loss of USD 200,000,000, this year it reported a profit of USD 150,000,000. After further inspection, it was found that the reported profit came from B2B, Business to Business contract revenue between the client and a telecommunications service company related to the installation of communication facilities in the client's transportation fleet. This transaction reverses the client's income statement from the previous loss to profit. The employment contract agreement is…
