Prokaryotes are unicellular microorganisms that lack a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles. Prokaryotes include bacteria and archaea. Prokaryotic cells do not have a true nucleus but have a nucleoid region that contains the cell’s DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). Biologist organized living system into five kingdoms, and all prokaryotes were grouped into kingdom Monera.
