Figure 24.50 shows a small plant near a thin lens. The ray shown is one of the principal rays for the lens. Each square is 2.0 cm along the horizontal direction, but the vertical direction is not to the same scale. Use information from the diagram to answer the following questions: (a) Using only the ray shown, decide what type of lens (converging or diverging) this is. (b) What is the focal length of the lens? (c) Locate the image by drawing the other two principal rays. (d) Calculate where the image should be, and compare this result with the graphical solution in part (c).

- You are given a convex lens X of focal length 50 mm. By using the equation and ray diagram, explain how far must an object to be placed behind the convex lens in order for the image is inverted and magnified three times. Describe how your answer change (if any), if the image had to be upright and same magnification. Now, you are given another convex lens Y with the focal length of 5 times larger than focal length of the convex lens X. Suggest an optical instrument that are using both lens and describe the characteristics of the final image constructed by the instrument. Support your answer with a ray diagram.arrow_forwardAn object is 12.0 cm from a converging lens (focal length = 15.0 cm). Determine the image magnification.
